What is mamajuana?

Mamajuana is an alcoholic beverage that originated in Hispaniola, now known as the Dominican Republic. Mamajuana began as an herbal tea created by the Taino Indians over 500 years ago for health and medicinal purposes -- made from a combination of different Dominican herbs, spices, sticks, barks and honey. Later Spanish explorers added European alcohol (rum and red wine) with the Taino’s herbal tea to create one of the first distilled spirits in the Americas, and the first mamajuana.

Is mamajuana good for mixed drinks?

Is mamajuana legal?

Yes. Mamajuana is an alcoholic beverage, not marijuana, therefore it is legal throughout all of the U.S. Some ingredients for homemade mamajuana are available in dry form. However, customs in the U.S. and some countries will not permit its transport unless in the liquid form.
